Artemisia was one of the first renowned female ‘old-master’ painters who was trained by a family of artists and ran her own artists workshop. This visual ode to her opens this series, whilst the other images discuss the female characters who were frequently depicted in artworks by the renaissance old master painters in a time where biblical stories were the only true permitted narrative within the visual frame, and artists had to find a way to express themselves amidst those boundaries. Artemisia’s women stand alone as stronger and bolder than those of her male counterparts and the female gaze is very noticable in her work.
